The festive spirit has officially arrived at The Orange Tree Day Nursery in Derby, and our little ones are already hard at work bringing a very special holiday tradition to life! This year, our children are stepping into Christmas with Speech and Language UK’s Sign Up to Sing campaign, a sponsored, signing singalong that proves using your voice isn’t the only way to speak up!
Our nursery superstars are hard at work learning to sign and sing everyone’s absolute favourite festive song, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, using Makaton!
We were so blown away by their enthusiasm during their very first rehearsal that we just had to share. Look how amazingly they did for their first practice! Their little hands were moving, their faces were glowing with confidence and their excitement was truly infectious.

What an incredible 18 months it has been for our Orange Tree family!
We are absolutely bursting with pride to announce that, thanks to the kindness, generosity and enthusiasm of our wonderful families, children and staff, we have raised an amazing £8,181.94 for The Harley Jae Trust! Across our six nurseries in Hucknall, Derby, Mickleover, Stoke, Burnaston and Burton, everyone has come together to support a cause that means so much to us.
The Harley Jae Trust does incredible work supporting children living with life-limiting conditions and their families, helping to provide care, comfort and support when it matters most.

Children learn best when they're actually doing, playing, and getting stuck in! Today at The Orange Tree Day Nursery Hucknall, our little ones jumped right into a nursery car wash. It was plenty of splashy fun, but it also gave them a brilliant chance to pick up real-world skills and learn more about how things work around them.
Before the activity began, the children participated in a discussion about road and vehicle safety, exploring how to stay safe in car parks and around moving and stationary vehicles. Together, we talked about why it is important to listen carefully to adults, remain aware of our surroundings and follow instructions to keep ourselves and others safe. Throughout the activity, the children demonstrated excellent listening skills and responsibility, showing they could apply this knowledge in a real-life context.

The children thoroughly enjoyed participating in our Bear Hunt sensory walk within the forest garden. As we read the story together, they explored each stage through a sensory walk experience, bringing the narrative to life.
The children enthusiastically journeyed through water and other story settings before finally discovering the bear.
Excitement quickly turned to laughter as they hurried back indoors, recreating the story’s dramatic ending.
At nursery, we have celebrated National Sports Week with a fun-filled day dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles, physical activity and inspiring a love of sport from an early age.
We believe that introducing children to exercise and movement during their early years helps to build positive habits that can last a lifetime. Sport not only supports children’s physical development but also helps to improve confidence, teamwork, communication skills and overall wellbeing.

At our nursery, we believe every child’s voice matters. Recently, our children took part in a Nursery Council session where they had the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas—just like a real council! The focus of this discussion was something very important to them: food.
On Saturday 7 February 2026 we were very fortunate to be joined by educator, author and champion storyteller, Neil Griffiths.
