Children learn best when they're actually doing, playing, and getting stuck in! Today at The Orange Tree Day Nursery Hucknall, our little ones jumped right into a nursery car wash. It was plenty of splashy fun, but it also gave them a brilliant chance to pick up real-world skills and learn more about how things work around them.
Before the activity began, the children participated in a discussion about road and vehicle safety, exploring how to stay safe in car parks and around moving and stationary vehicles. Together, we talked about why it is important to listen carefully to adults, remain aware of our surroundings and follow instructions to keep ourselves and others safe. Throughout the activity, the children demonstrated excellent listening skills and responsibility, showing they could apply this knowledge in a real-life context.
As part of our commitment to promoting positive citizenship, we explored what it means to be a valued member of the community. The children discussed how helping others, taking pride in shared spaces and working together are all ways we can make a positive contribution. By caring for the nursery environment and working collaboratively, they developed a greater sense of belonging and responsibility within their community.
The activity also provided excellent opportunities for the children to develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. When they realised they could not reach the higher parts of the vehicle, they worked together to suggest solutions, adapting their approach and using the resources available to complete the task. Their perseverance, resilience and teamwork were wonderful examples of children thinking creatively to overcome challenges.
This experience naturally supported several areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), including:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Building confidence, developing independence, cooperating with peers and understanding the importance of helping others.
- Communication and Language – Listening attentively, following multi-step instructions, engaging in meaningful conversations and sharing ideas with adults and peers.
- Physical Development – Strengthening gross and fine motor skills through washing, scrubbing, reaching and squeezing sponges while developing coordination and control.
- Understanding the World – Learning about safety around vehicles, recognising the roles we all play within our community and exploring how everyday jobs help others.
The experience also reflected the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning:
- Playing and Exploring – Children eagerly engaged in a new experience, showing curiosity and enthusiasm as they investigated different ways to clean the vehicle.
- Active Learning – They remained motivated and focused throughout the activity, demonstrating pride and satisfaction in their achievements.
- Creating and Thinking Critically – Children identified challenges, shared ideas, tested solutions and adapted their approaches when faced with obstacles, particularly when reaching the higher areas of the car.
At The Orange Tree Day Nursery Hucknall, experiences such as these demonstrate how purposeful play and real-life learning opportunities help children develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need for the future. We are incredibly proud of the teamwork, resilience, communication and community spirit our children displayed today, proving that learning can be both meaningful and great fun.
